The European Union’s climate chief told COP30 on Monday it was time to impose the broadest possible carbon pricing scheme, defending an issue several countries oppose over fears about its potential economic effects.

“This is something we do need to pursue. Pricing carbon is something that we need to pursue with as many as possible, as quickly as possible,” Wopke Hoekstra, the European commissioner for climate, told the UN gathering in Belem, Brazil.
