Nestled in the heart of the Valencian Community, the town of Onda blends cultural heritage with a growing commitment to sustainable tourism. With its medieval castle, labyrinthine old quarter, and proximity to the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park, Onda has long attracted visitors seeking both history and nature. Now, it stands out for another reason: its dedication to responsible tourism practices.

In May 2025, Onda was awarded the national S certificate of Tourism Sustainability by the Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality and Sustainability. This certification recognises destinations that implement tourism models aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It follows the earlier achievement of the Q certificate for Tourism Quality, a designation awarded to sites that meet rigorous standards of service and infrastructure. Together, the two recognitions mark Onda as one of the few municipalities in the region with double certification in both quality and sustainability.

The town’s approach includes strategies to preserve its natural and historical assets while promoting environmentally conscious travel and inclusive local development. Initiatives range from improving waste management systems to supporting local businesses and conserving architectural heritage.

Onda appears in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 6 May 2025. The satellite’s high-resolution data not only showcases the area’s geographical features but also supports sustainable development efforts. Copernicus open data contributes to urban planning, smart city infrastructure, and monitoring systems that help local governments shape more sustainable tourism strategies.

By securing national recognition for its sustainable policies, Onda sets an example for other municipalities aiming to balance tourism growth with long-term ecological and cultural stewardship.
