Flooding along the River Towy in Wales illustrates the impact of Storm Bram, which swept across the United Kingdom and Ireland in early December, bringing strong winds, prolonged rainfall, and widespread disruption. Travel networks were heavily affected, with train, flight, and ferry cancellations reported across multiple regions, while power outages left thousands of households without electricity. By 10 December, flood warnings were in force across large parts of the United Kingdom as rivers responded rapidly to saturated ground and persistent rain.

Wales was among the hardest-hit areas. Heavy rainfall and strong winds battered much of the country on 9 December as multiple Met Office warnings came into effect. A yellow warning for rain covered almost the entire country from Monday evening into Tuesday afternoon, alongside a yellow wind warning affecting west, mid, and north Wales. In south Wales, an amber rain warning was issued overnight, reflecting the heightened risk of flooding. The River Taff burst its banks in the Blackweir area of Cardiff, prompting local authorities to close nearby parkland in Pontypridd as water levels rose.

The image, captured by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites on 10 December 2025 at 06:31 UTC, shows the River Towy and surrounding valley with flooded areas highlighted in red. The satellite data reveals a continuous stretch of inundation extending for around 30 kilometres, indicating how floodwater spread well beyond the main river channel into low-lying land on either side.

Such imagery demonstrates the value of open-access satellite data during severe weather events. Sentinel-1’s radar instruments can observe the Earth’s surface through cloud cover and darkness, making them particularly useful during storms when optical imagery is limited. This capability supports authorities in assessing the extent of flooding, prioritising response efforts, and planning recovery once waters begin to recede.

As Storm Bram moved away on Wednesday, conditions gradually improved across much of the UK, with sunshine returning in some areas. However, the flooding documented along the River Towy remains a clear record of the storm’s impact on Welsh river systems.
