Antarctic Ice Sheet

The Antarctic Ice Sheet is the vast, continuous mass of land-based ice that covers most of the Antarctic continent and stores the majority of the world’s freshwater ice. It is divided into the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, separated by the Transantarctic Mountains, and in places exceeds several kilometres in thickness. The ice sheet flows slowly outward under its own weight, feeding ice shelves and glaciers, and contributes to global sea level rise when it loses mass through melting or ice discharge into the ocean.
