Adaptation

Adaptation refers to adjustments made by natural systems and human societies in response to actual or expected environmental changes in order to reduce harm or take advantage of potential benefits. In biological contexts, adaptation describes heritable traits shaped by natural selection that enhance survival and reproduction. In climate and environmental policy, adaptation includes measures such as infrastructure planning, water management, public health strategies and ecosystem restoration to address the impacts of climate change and variability.
