Amazon refers to the Amazon rainforest and associated basin in northern South America, the largest tropical rainforest on Earth, covering millions of square kilometres across nine countries and containing the most biodiverse tropical forest on the planet. It includes extensive river systems, enormous carbon stores and complex ecosystems that influence regional and global climate, water cycles and biodiversity. The Amazon plays a central role in carbon sequestration, rainfall patterns and ecosystem services, and is a focal point for research on deforestation, climate change and conservation.
