Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that lack a nucleus and belong to the domain Bacteria. They occur in almost all environments, including soil, water, air and within living organisms. Bacteria play essential roles in processes such as nutrient cycling, decomposition and fermentation, while some species can cause disease.
