Climate Variability

Climate variability refers to natural fluctuations in climate conditions, such as temperature, precipitation and atmospheric circulation, that occur over months, years, decades or longer around a long-term average. It arises from internal processes within the climate system and interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, land surface and cryosphere, as well as external influences such as volcanic activity and changes in solar radiation. Climate variability affects the frequency and intensity of events including droughts, floods and storms, and operates alongside long-term climate change.
