Coastal Ecosystems

Coastal ecosystems are ecological systems located at the interface between land and sea, including habitats such as mangroves, salt marshes, seagrass meadows, coral reefs and estuaries. These ecosystems support high biodiversity, provide nursery grounds for marine species and deliver services such as coastal protection and carbon storage. Coastal ecosystems are sensitive to sea level rise, pollution, overfishing and climate change.
