Lakes are inland bodies of standing freshwater or saline water surrounded by land. They form through geological processes such as glaciation, tectonic activity, volcanic action or river dynamics. Lakes support aquatic ecosystems, provide water resources and are studied in relation to hydrology, biodiversity and climate variability.
