Ozone Layer

The ozone layer is a region of the Earth’s stratosphere that contains relatively high concentrations of ozone, a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms. Located roughly 15 to 35 kilometres above the surface, it absorbs most of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation, particularly UV-B, thereby protecting living organisms from DNA damage and other health effects. The ozone layer has been affected by human-made chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons, leading to depletion in some regions, but international agreements such as the Montreal Protocol have contributed to its gradual recovery.
