Photosynthesis is the biological process by which plants, algae and some microorganisms convert sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into energy-rich organic compounds and oxygen. It is one of the fundamental processes sustaining life on Earth and forms the basis of most food webs and ecosystem productivity. Photosynthesis also plays a major role in the global carbon cycle and influences atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and climate systems.
