Planetary Boundaries

Planetary Boundaries is a scientific framework that identifies nine environmental processes that help define the safe operating space for humanity while maintaining the stability and resilience of the Earth system. These boundaries cover climate change, biosphere integrity, land-system change, freshwater change, biogeochemical flows of nitrogen and phosphorus, ocean acidification, atmospheric aerosol loading, stratospheric ozone depletion, and novel entities such as synthetic chemicals and plastics. The framework is widely used to assess global sustainability and the risks associated with exceeding ecological limits that could lead to large-scale or irreversible environmental change.
