Sea-Level Rise

Sea-level rise refers to the long-term increase in the average level of the world’s oceans, primarily driven by thermal expansion of seawater as it warms and the addition of water from melting glaciers and ice sheets. Rising sea levels contribute to coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion and increased flooding risk in low-lying areas. Sea-level rise is monitored through satellite observations and tide gauges and is a key indicator of climate change.
