Soil Carbon

Soil carbon refers to the carbon stored in soils in the form of organic matter and inorganic compounds. It plays a central role in soil fertility, nutrient cycling, water retention and ecosystem productivity, while also acting as a major component of the global carbon cycle. Changes in soil carbon are closely linked to agriculture, land use, deforestation, ecosystem degradation and climate change mitigation.
