Seeking to boost flagging investment in offshore wind power, Denmark’s government on Monday announced aid of up to 55.2 billion kroner ($8.3 billion) with a new call for tenders.

“Globally, there have been bumps in the road in getting offshore wind up and running in recent years, which is why we have also agreed that the state will lend a helping hand to the projects if necessary,” Lars Aagaard, Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, said in statement.

Denmark has planned to build six wind farms in the North Sea, with a combined capacity of six gigawatts.

By December 2024, the call for tenders for the first three of the wind farms in the project had failed to attract any bids.

The support package presented by the government Monday is intended to promote interest in the other three wind farms in the project.

With a combined capacity of three gigawatts, they would more than double Denmark’s offshore wind energy production, which currently amounts to 2.7 gigawatts.

Denmark aims to increase its wind energy production capacity to 14 gigawatts by 2030.
