La Paz, Bolivia | AFP

At least 20 people were killed and dozens remain missing after a major river in eastern Bolivia burst its banks at the weekend following heavy rains, authorities said Monday.

The flooding from the Pirai river, which flows through Bolivia’s most populous city Santa Cruz, affected mainly the outlying districts of El Torno and Colpa Belgica, deputy minister for civil defense Alfredo Troche told local radio.

On Saturday, authorities had given an initial toll of three dead and eight missing.
