Trenčín begins 2026 carrying the title of European Capital of Culture, a role it shares this year with Oulu in Finland. For twelve months, the Slovak city is set to host a programme aimed at strengthening links between local communities and cultural partners across Europe.

The European Capitals of Culture initiative, created in 1985, rotates annually between selected cities. It is designed to promote cultural diversity, encourage cross-border cooperation, and support urban development through the arts. In Trenčín, the year unfolds under the banner of ‘Curiosity’, a concept organisers use to connect generations, creative fields, and civic life.

Trenčín developed around a strategic crossing of the Váh River, with its castle overlooking the town from a rocky hill. In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 7 November 2025, the city’s built-up area follows the river corridor, framed by agricultural land and surrounding hills. The view from orbit places the cultural capital within its broader landscape, where historical architecture and modern districts coexist.

The European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme, together with the Galileo satellite navigation system, contributes to the documentation and monitoring of cultural heritage sites. High-resolution imagery and positioning data allow authorities to track gradual environmental impacts and structural changes, supporting long-term conservation planning.

Trenčín’s opening events are scheduled for mid-February 2026. The programme includes contemporary art installations at the castle, a literary festival bringing together authors from Slovakia and other European countries, a summer showcase for emerging music, and the inauguration of a new bridge intended to link neighbourhoods on both sides of the river. Through these projects, the city seeks to integrate culture into everyday urban life while reinforcing its connections within Europe.
