Ecosystems

Ecosystems are systems formed by living organisms interacting with their environment, including both biotic components (plants, animals, microbes) and abiotic components (soil, water, climate). Ecosystem structure and function are influenced by external factors, such as climate, and internal factors, such as species interactions, decomposition, and succession. Ecosystems are dynamic, with the capacity to resist and recover from disturbances – a property known as ecological resilience. They provide goods and services essential to humans, including food, water, air purification, and pollination, but can be disrupted or degraded by human impacts, pollution, habitat fragmentation, and invasive species.
