Extreme event attribution

Extreme event attribution is a field of climate research that assesses the extent to which human-induced climate change has influenced the likelihood or intensity of specific extreme weather events. It combines observational data, climate models and statistical analysis to compare current conditions with simulations of a climate without significant anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Extreme event attribution provides estimates of how global warming may have altered the probability, magnitude or duration of events such as heatwaves, heavy rainfall or drought.
